My main job is deck officer in the merchant navy. For half of the year, I stay at shore, while for the rest I am working on ships.
As a 3rd Officer on a tanker, my main responsibility is standing navigational watches, typically from 8 to 12, both day and night. During these watches, I’m in charge of safely navigating the vessel, monitoring radar, AIS, weather conditions, and ensuring we follow the voyage plan while avoiding traffic and hazards. I keep all nautical charts and publications up to date and make sure the bridge equipment is functioning properly. I'm also responsible for the maintenance and regular inspection of all safety and firefighting equipment onboard, including lifeboats, life rafts, extinguishers, and SCBA sets. I assist the Chief Officer with cargo operations, where I help monitor tank levels, temperatures, and pressures during loading and discharging. I’m also actively involved in ballasting and deballasting operations, making sure everything is done in line with the vessel’s stability requirements and environmental regulations. On top of all that, every port brings inspections, from PSC, vetting inspectors, terminal reps, or company audits, so I always have to be fully prepared with updated paperwork, proper PPE, and detailed knowledge of safety procedures. It’s a demanding job that requires constant alertness, teamwork, and a solid understanding of both navigation and cargo systems. Tankers are high-risk environments, so I always have to be sharp, follow strict procedures, and coordinate well with the team. It’s a job that demands attention to detail, discipline, and a strong sense of responsibility.
